The Sierra Leone Golf Open started on Monday the 21st November, 2016 and ended on Sunday 27th November, 2016 with a well attended dinner & prize-giving ceremony. A grand total of $25,000 was handed out with the winner receiving $10,000.

Due to the Ebola outbreak, the last time the event was organised was in 2013. Despite the current auterity measures in Sierra Leone,  the Freetown Golf Club was able to raise $40,000 needed to organise the event, through sponsors, with a single  sponsor putting out $20,000. This is what lead the Men's Team Captan, Arne Johansen to proclaim,"There would be no sports without sponsors"

He however was very impressed and encouraged by the golf on display throughout the week. " I saw golf this week and local talent this week that is no different than what is on the world stage.", he added.

The Women's Team Captain, Natasha Johansen described the week as " Outstanding and fantastic". She encouraged more ladies to take up the sport. She explained that she was quite apathetic to golf and as a thirteen year old only went to the golf course, following her mom quite relunctantly. She got hooked on the sport and the rest is history. She also announced that there are free lessons organised for ladies new to the sport.

Former New York Giants, safety, Gibril Wilson was also in attendance and picked up a prize for "Nearest to the Hole" drive.
